Sovereign Inn Cooma
Cooma, heart of the Monaro region and core of South Eastern NSW, is located 114 km south of the National Capital Canberra, at an altitude of 800 meters.
The area was first discovered by European explorers in 1823. For the next 100 years the village grew into a township of more than 2000 people. The majority of buildings were constructed from hewn blocks of granite, the bedrock on which the town stands. In 1949 the gigantic Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme was built in Cooma. The project proposed to redirect the precious waters which previously ran to waste, through mountain tunnels to inland streams for reliable irrigation. It took 25 years to construct at a cost of $800 million. Today it is still the largest and most brilliantly designed multi-storage hydro system in the world.
With crisp mountain air and the many natural displays, in spring the mountains come alive with an artist’s pallet of colours as the wild flowers come into bloom. Cooma is the ideal base from where the day's touring can commence.
